Joy and Pandemonium in Mississippi

Added...gameday commercial that ran last week.

It started in the morning...in The Grove with Gameday and special guest picker Katy Perry. Perry was a head scratcher. She has no connection to Mississippi or Ole Miss...except, as it turns out her manager and mentor are Ole Miss grads. She actually did a great job. Somebody coached her well. If the videos from last night in Oxford are any indication she may be a Rebel for life now.

The corndogs are an almost Dadaist joke about LSU.

The game...one of the best I've ever seen.

The aftermath. It's hilarious watching the girls in their dresses coming over the rails.

One more...and then I'll stop. This is a piece that was done for the show by Wright Thompson. A pretty sharp sports writer from Clarkesdale.
It's a touching piece about his Daddy and the way that these games act as a bonding agent for families and our culture in general.

  1. Weird. Katy Perry??
I watched the 'highlights' clip: what the hell was going on? What's five and 'o'? First time since '62? I guess they are happy about that
The pitch invasion was hilarious. Very unlike anything you'd get in our football. I swear I saw a couple of blokes in suits and another in a bow-tie.

    1. You did see that. Nobody comes to the game raggedy but, the students are always dressed...sport coats and ties...sundresses. It's tradition at Ole Miss and common at most of the schools down here but nobody does it like Oxford.

There are two things going on here...one, it's Alabama. Ole Miss played its first football season in 1893...until Saturday they had only beaten Alabama 9 times. As I've mentioned before Alabama is a force of nature...they are the boss. Right next door to Bama, Ole Miss hasn't been really relevant since the 60's.
That brings us to the second thing...Ole Miss met Alabama on equal terms Saturday. This wasn't a shocking upset...The Rebels are a very good football team. They're 5 and 0....Five wins, Zero loses. As you heard, they haven't done that since 1962.

For most of the sports history there was no playoff...sports writers and coaches ranked the teams...and that's how national champion was chosen. The only way to ensure a championship was to win every game. College Football is still largely that way...you have to win. My own Gators have never had a perfect season and they've been playing since 1906 (they have managed 3 national championships though).

Anyway Ole Miss has seven more games to play...next week they'll be at Texas A&M...not a pushover. They are ranked number 3...we'll see how they handle the success.

  2. "It is the way we talk to the dead" - lovely line.

A pitch invasion like that over here in Blighty and there'd be hell to pay!

    1. It's impossible to hear Wright's story without thinking of me and my Daddy's own adventure and misadventures with the Gators and now The Boy...he's got it bad already.

In the SEC it cost you somewhat less than hell...Ole Miss was fined 50 grand by the Conference. Liability issues I'm sure...50,000 vs 5 billion in marketing for the school.

Sadly I have seen this scene many times...so many times I thought me and Daddy were cursed. For about five years, every time we went to see the Gators on the road...they lost. In 2001, they had one of the best teams they've ever fielded, they were ranked number one and playing an Auburn team that was in the dumps. When Auburn won the students flooded the field. The authorities conceded one goal post...but surrounded the other.

One fat kid decided he would take down the other goal post all by his self...he ran about 80 yards across the field before the State Troopers tackled and cuffed him. There's no way he's not still telling that story and I doubt for a second he's ever regretted it.

  3. You can suck it until you devote an entire post to Mississippi State.

    1. Oh yeah...I forgot...there is a portion of the state that wasn't concerned with what was happening in Oxford on Saturday.

  4. Yeah but it was in Starkville that your husband had to pull me off that boy that was begging for a beat down. Then, of course, there was the Saturday that me and your Daddy were taunted and harassed by children and grown men and women...alley cats...on our two mile trek back to the car. And by you everyday the following week on the answering machine because you didn't have to heart to harass Daddy...yes I have my share of memories from Starkville.

Starkvegas will get some love...for the fine Mississippi State fans I know...that make up for the few phony classless acts...and because you're kin.

  5. I was completely baffled from top to bottom, until I hit Section O Row 61, then someone round here must've started peeling some onions.

    1. Odd. A similar thing happened to me...a speck or two of dust seemed to catch me in the eyes there at the end.

    1. Wright is very good. He's also very funny when he's relaxed on local and regional sports shows. He's a professional but he's also an obsessed fan...which he can be when he's on Finebaum or whatever.

That's his voice in the first video...the Grove commercial.

He covered soccer in South America for a long while.
